Regarding Andy’s blog posting abotu the "going to the wrong replica"

Mary Beth Raven  February 25 2010 03:42:58 PM
Over on Andy Pedisch's blog today  he asked about a recurring "goes to the wrong replica" issue
Here is how it is supposed to work.
There was a bug (now fixed but I do not know which release, I think in 8.5.1) introduced in Notes 8.0 in which the last used replica was used even on startup.

There is a location document and it has:

which specifies either use server or local copy.

The behavior is suppose to be:
    • During a Notes session, the 1st time mail is opened it is based on this document.
    • Subsequent opens of mail during the session will open the last used replica.

Thanks to Paul Joviak for explaining the history to me.

Can you confirm which version of Notes it was fixed in? We have this problem all the time and it confuses users because they don't notice they're in their local replica and are wondering why they aren't getting emails or they clients aren't getting their emails.

    Thanks

One of our customers had this issue as well. They wound up deciding to change their entire user base to default to local copies and replicate mail at some ridiculous rate like every minute. That minimized the problem for them, but obviously created others.

As I recall the issue was supposed to be resolved in 8.5.1 for them, but either it was not or they were just already committed to going down that path.

Their users were not very technical and most were not capable of coping with the issue.

This was the # support issue in our company. I cannot tell you how many users commented on how the new version was slow to deliver mail, that their Blackberries refreshed more, how painful it was to flip to a local replica that was out of date or lacking view indexes since it had not been used for a while. We called it the "sticky replica" issue.

    Mary Beth,

Lotus Support informed me that this issue was resolved in 8.5.1, however that is not the case. I have an 8.5 and 8.5.1 cleint and it continues to be a problem. Below is the response I received from IBM

"This issue has been reported before and numerous customers did not like this functionality. Instead in versions 8.0.3 and 8.5.1 the functionality has been reverted to look to the mailfile location mentioned in the location document when the Notes client is opened. this was reported in software problem report # AJAS7PDKER. I have created customer report # LO37830 for you against this issue. If you have any further queries in regard to this issue please let me know, otherwise are you happy to close this PMR?

    Kind regards,

    Ronan Redican

Ouch. Thanks for the comments folks; sounds like 2 things, still:

    1. the "fix" above might not actually be workign "as designed"

    2. The "fix" above might not be what people want.

@Jeanie-- it sounds like you do NOT want Ronan to close the PMR because it is still not working.

Update! I did some searching given the SPR number above and I see that the developer has submitted a fix for Notes 8.5.2. Please understand that my blog comment here cannot be taken as an official promise by IBM-- but I can rat least eport that a new fix has been submitted and targeted to the 8.5.2 codestream, so it means that IBM did continue to investigate and we hope that we'll have a fix.

When will the 8.5.2 code be released?
